Hosting a Study Day

Our evidence-based and Physiological Breech Birth study day can be booked at your institution. You can see the indicative content in the supplementary materials of our training evaluation, and on all of our booking pages.

There is currently a very high demand for our in-person courses. We are prioritising OptiBreech sites, and you may want to consider sending staff to one of our days at these sites. Please also discuss with your Labour Ward leads whether they would like to contribute to our prospective observational study following training at your Trust.

Hosting a study day requires the following:

  • Venue that can fit at least 40 people – there is a minimum requirement of 20 delegates per training day. We also require 5 spaces that we can allocate to OptiBreech team members or outside attendees at each event.
  • Audio-Visual capabilities: We need to be able to connect our laptop and project onto a large screen. We have appropriate adaptors for our Mac.
  • Refreshments for visitors: This is usually simple coffee and tea upon arrival, and clear directions about whether lunch will be provided, should be brought and/or can be bought. Some Midwifery Societies have organised bake sales with savouries included as a fundraiser. Please indicate arrangements so we can update the Eventbrite page.
  • Doll and Pelvis Models: We will bring some of these. If you can provide additional sets, then you will have them to disseminate training after the study day. We use and recommend these: Fetal Doll Model; and Cloth Pelvic Model or Female Pelvis Model
  • If you would like doctors to practice applying forceps, please provide an appropriate model and a pair of forceps.

Excellent day with lots of ideas to take away as we launch our breech service next week at @RLHMaternity, offering even more choice and support and better births for women at RLH!

Payment options are:

  • Eventbrite, an on-line booking system where participants book directly with us. This is our preference, as it enables us to organise additional trainers according to the number of attendees. Tickets are £100. If your Trust/organisation would like to subsidise tickets for your members, this can be arranged. RECOMMENDED
  • Pay via invoicing at £100/each per attendee. The organiser attends for free.

Frequently asked questions:

My trust is interested in hosting a breech training day. Please can you confirm the following: If it is suitable for Midwives and Doctors? Yes. Please see MDT evaluations here: https://breechbirth.org.uk/publications/

If complications/ head entrapment is covered (and how to overcome these including the use of forceps)? Content is covered in detail in our evaluations and roughly equates to the description of the online course: https://breechbirth.org.uk/the-training/courses/

If it includes a train the trainer approach to enable teaching to be disseminated? Yes. We use a train the trainer process throughout the study day. All manoeuvres will be taught in theory, with videos. We will then teach attendees who are themselves clinical skills facilitators.

Please can you tell me the cost, the amount of delegates and what training resources/ facilities are required. This is covered here: https://breechbirth.org.uk/the-training/hosting-a-study-day/ The cost is currently £100 per attendee, regardless of the number of attendees.

Can all of the course materials including the presentations and videos be used for teaching purposes at the Trust (on mandatory training days for example?) The study day comes with one year’s access to our online video library (password protected) and a resources Dropbox, that includes an update presentation for use in mandatory training activities. This is the context in which most skills trainers need to re-use our materials. Those who deliver training within their own institutions are also welcome to become involved in delivering the training with Breech Birth Network, to further consolidate their own skills by assisting delivery of the full course on a periodic basis.
